The Truth behind Grain-free Diets for Dogs

Making the right nutritional choices for your family can be difficult. Many pet owners find it similarly daunting when choosing the best diet for their fur babies. A recent trend in human foods has seen the emergence of grain-free dog foods. But, are these grain-free diets better for your pets?

Allergies and food intolerances to grains are RARE in dogs. The most common food allergens in dogs are BEEF and DAIRY. Corn, wheat and soy are rarely the cause of food allergies.

Importantly, only 10% of ALLERGY cases in dogs are caused by food!

Common grains such as Barley, corn, oats, rice, wheat, rye and sorghum CAN have BENEFITS for your dog. They provide an important source of soluble and insoluble fibre, energy, protein, Vitamin E and linoleic acid.

There is also much confusion amongst pet owners regarding grain-free and low-carbohydrate diets. Many grain-free pet foods contain ingredients such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, lentils, quinoa and peas. They often contain the SAME carbohydrate levels or even higher than diets containing grains.

In summary, the most important thing to remember when choosing a pet food is to choose a diet that provides your dog with complete and BALANCED nutrition.

High protein, low carbohydrate or grain-free diets may not be of benefit to your pet.
